With cheap scooter insurance prices for learners, younger riders, experienced riders, commuters and scootering enthusiasts we offer a complete low-cost, high quality service to all owners of scooters. And as a specialist broker, we can offer cover if your scooter is a classic or modified.
Specialist insurance for 🛵
Perhaps you’re a teenager with a 50cc Chinese scooter, or maybe a classic scooter enthusiast with a Lambretta or Vespa. You might enjoy rides with a friend on a two seater Suzuki Burgman, or you may just appreciate your scooter as a stylish and comfortable way to get from A to B. Whatever your lifestyle, there is probably a motor scooter out there for you, but finding a reasonable scooter quote may be somewhat trickier.
The problem is that a lot of insurance companies don’t understand the particular needs of the scooter owner. They don’t take into account the many ways in which scooters differ from bikes, and as a result, the unwary scooterist may be charged over the odds.
Bikesure is different
When you take out an insurance policy from Bikesure, you can be confident that the policy matches your needs as a scooter owner. That’s because we have access to an array of specialist insurance schemes, many of which have been designed purely for scooters, including tailored schemes catering for standard scooters, classic scooters and customised scooters.
What’s more, when you use our online scooter quote and buy system you can instantly compare scooter quotes selected from those available and then choose which one is best for you. If you like the price you see you can buy online, or speak to one of our knowledgeable underwriters to take up the policy or discuss further options.
Because our insurance is tailored to your needs, you can choose which features will benefit you most. Every policy comes with £100,000 of free legal cover, but we also offer optional add-ons including personal injury cover, comprehensive breakdown cover and protective clothing and helmet insurance.
Protection for 50cc and 125cc scooters
Whether your scooter has a 50cc engine or a 125cc engine, Bikesure can help. As the UK’s largest motorbike insurance broker, we help you source affordable cover that can be tailored to your needs. This means that features such as breakdown cover or helmet and leathers cover can be added to your policy with ease. So whether you require 50cc 🛵 insurance, 125cc scooter insurance, or even cover for scooters with more power, give us a ring for a free, no-obligation quote.
Protection for higher cc scooters
We’re also well versed in covering higher cc maxi scooters. So whether you own a Peugeot XP 400 GT or a Honda Forza 750, we can help you get the right cover for your needs. With cover in Europe and further afield included as standard, as well as optional extras like breakdown and agreed value cover available, we’re sure you’ll find the insurance policy you need with us.
How much is scooter insurance?
This depends on the scooter you’ve chosen, as well as many other factors, including how long you’ve been riding, whether you’ve built up a no claims bonus, where you store your bike at night, and more.
That being said, scooters are often one of the most affordable ways of getting on the road, particularly if you own a lower-powered model like a 50cc or 125cc bike.
As we provide cover that’s tailored to your needs, and the cost of cover can vary so much, the best way to find out how much your insurance will cost is to get a quote with us directly.
How much is scooter insurance for a 16 year old?
If you’re a young rider and have only recently passed your CBT, you’ll likely face higher premiums than someone who has been riding for a few years. This is because insurers don’t know how safe you are as a rider, so they tend to charge you a higher premium to counteract the increased risk.
The good news is that, with just one or two years of claims-free riding under your belt, you’ll see these costs drop significantly.
Even if you’re in your first year of riding, make sure you get a quote with us as we offer competitive rates for scooters and young riders.
Will the scooter’s engine size affect the cost of my insurance?
Yes – as a general rule, the smaller the scooter’s engine, the lower your insurance. Of course, your quote depends on a lot more factors than the size of your vehicle’s engine, including the scooter’s make and model, but a 50cc scooter will usually be cheaper to insure than if you were to purchase a 125cc, 150cc or 400cc scooter.
If you’ve passed your A1 licence, we don’t blame you for wanting something a little more powerful, especially as scooters with 125cc engines can be ridden on motorways. Whichever you go with, a good choice for your scooter insurance is Bikesure. We even offer modified scooter insurance and cover for those with non-standard engines – just let us know about these when you give us a ring and we’ll work out a tailored quote for you.
What is the difference between a scooter and a moped?
Mopeds and scooters are often confused with each other, which is why we’re here to help you understand the key differences.
Simply put, a bike is classed as a scooter when it has a platform to place your feet while riding. Some scooters can go up to 800cc, whereas a moped has a maximum capacity of 50cc. These vehicles also have different max speeds, with mopeds only able to reach 28mph and scooters reaching as high as 115mph. These factors mean that scooters are generally a lot more powerful than mopeds – and usually tend to have a higher price tag.
At Bikesure, we offer both scooter and moped insurance; call us to find out more.

Do you need insurance for a scooter?
Yes, just like when you ride other vehicles in the UK, taking out insurance on your scooter – even if it’s a 50cc bike – is a legal requirement before you ride on public roads. You’ll need a minimum of third party only cover.
The only time when you don’t legally need cover for your bike is if you’ve got a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) from the DVLA. SORNing your scooter means you won’t be able to ride it on public roads. If you do decide to take your bike off the road, you might still want to consider taking out laid-up insurance, which covers your scooter against fire and theft.
Can I take out breakdown cover for my scooter?
Yes, we offer breakdown cover as an extra benefit to your policy. Cover includes roadside assistance, home start service, vehicle recovery and cover in the EU. Our network of over 1,800 breakdown and recovery specialists means that no matter where you are, we aim to reach you quickly. Just let us know if you’d like to add this to your policy.
Is scooter insurance the same as bike insurance?
Scooter insurance is a type of motorbike insurance, so it has the same levels of cover (i.e. third party only, third party fire and theft, and fully comprehensive) and the same process for making a claim.
The key difference is the cost. Most motorbike policies are more expensive as these bikes are generally more powerful than scooters. So if you own a scooter, it’s in your interest to take out specific scooter insurance.
