If you like the price you see, you can buy online, or speak to one of our knowledgeable underwriters to take up the policy or discuss further options.
From 50cc moped insurance designed for a learner through to highly specialist insurance quotes for modified mopeds, we can cover practically any 50cc motorcycle conceivable, including imports, which our rivals baulk at. We can even offer 50cc moped insurance to 16 year olds.
All of our insurance products for mopeds offer a great level of cover, and you can also choose from our range of add-ons or protection packages to provide a complete service to motorcyclists, including homestart breakdown cover, personal accident and road rage cover and helmet and leathers policies (which cover all your bike safetywear and equipment).
We offer temporary moped insurance
Yes, we offer short-term cover for mopeds, whether you want to use it for a day, a week, a month, the summer or three months of the year. If you’re borrowing a friend’s moped or you only use your bike for a few months of the year, this tends to be more cost-effective than taking out an annual policy.
Moped insurance for young riders, including 16 year olds
Whether you’re 16, 17 or 18, welcome to the biker club! We can insure moped riders of all ages, including those just starting out on two wheels. Just note that you might need a guarantor if you’ll be paying monthly.
How much is moped insurance in the UK?
Moped insurance is generally one of the most affordable policies on the market. As these bikes are limited to 50cc and under, they are relatively low powered, so insurers tend to see them as a lower risk compared to higher-powered bikes.
Of course, other factors are taken into account when insurance providers calculate your premium, including how much experience you have on the road, any no claims bonus (NCB) you’ve built up, the moped model you ride, and your location. Rest assured we can usually get you an affordable moped insurance quote – if you’d like a better idea of how much your premium will be, call us directly.
How much is moped insurance for young riders?
If you’re 16 years old, have only just passed your CBT and are starting your first year of riding, you’ll likely find that your premium is much higher than cover for a more experienced rider, even on the same bike.
That being said, we understand that getting a moped is many young riders’ first taste of freedom. We can offer great rates for new riders, allowing you to start building up to NCB.
And even a year of claims-free riding will help reduce your premium, so if you’re 17 or 18 years old with one or two years’ NCB built up, you’ll likely pay a lot less on your moped insurance than you did in the first year.
Why is my moped insurance so expensive?
There are a number of factors that could affect your insurance premium.
For instance, you might find that your premium is more expensive if you live in a major city, especially if thefts are common in the area.
You might also find that, if you’ve bought a relatively obscure or new bike, insurance is higher than if you were to choose a reliable moped from a reputable manufacturer. This is because insurance companies have a more extensive claims data history to draw from on mopeds that are more widely used.
Lastly, if you’ve been convicted of a motoring offence, you might also find that the cost of your cover is more expensive than before.
If you’re facing high moped insurance costs, get in contact with our knowledgeable team. We can often find you cover where other providers cannot.
Wider rising motor insurance costs
If you’ve had your moped for several years and have found that your premium has risen despite not having claimed on your insurance, this could be due in part to wider increasing motor insurance costs. These have been caused by increased costs involved with repairs, as well as longer repair times.
For mopeds in particular, premiums are being affected by crash for cash fraud being undertaken by networks of organised criminal gangs operating out of seemingly legitimate motorcycle garages. This has resulted in over £70 million in fraudulent claims, which is pushing up the costs of moped insurance, especially in areas of South London. Whilst the police are trying to tackle this fraudulent behaviour, it’s still affecting premiums.
If you’ve been affected by rising premiums, you’re not alone. We’re doing all we can to help you continue to get affordable moped insurance, so speak to our team if you’re struggling to get reasonably priced cover.
How can I reduce the cost of my moped insurance?
There are a number of things you can do that insurers reward with lower premiums:
- Become a member of an owners club: you could get up to 15% off your premium if you let us know you’re a member of an owners club.
- Choose a limited mileage policy: if you only ride up to 7,500 miles a year, you’ll often be able to get more cost-effective moped insurance.
- Install Thatcham-approved security devices: given moped thefts are relatively high, adding insurer-endorsed alarms, trackers and other security features will help lower your premium.
- Keeping your moped in a garage: storing your moped in a secure location like a garage or locked outbuilding when it isn’t in use helps reduce the risk of theft, which can lower the costs of cover.
- Let us know about any previous moped riding experience: attended moped riding sessions before your CBT? Let us know as this could help.
- Insure multiple bikes with us: if you own two, three, or even a collection of bikes, consider taking out cover for all of them with us. This tends to work out cheaper than if you were to insure them all separately.
Get a specialist moped insurance quote
The problem is that a lot of motorcycle insurance companies don’t understand the particular needs of the moped owner. They don’t take account of the many ways in which mopeds, and their riders, differ from bikes, and as a result, the unwary moped rider may be charged over the odds.
As a specialist insurance broker, we’re well versed in providing cover for moped riders that’s tailored specifically to your needs – all at a price you’ll like.
FAQs
Do I need insurance for a moped?
Yes, just like any vehicle, insurance is a legal requirement if you’re riding a moped on UK roads. This is the same whether you own an electric or traditional petrol moped.
Can I ride a moped on my car insurance?
No, you’ll need to pass the CBT and take out specific moped insurance to ensure you’re covered for the different risks associated with owning and riding one of these bikes.
Can you insure a moped without a CBT?
So long as you aren’t going to ride your moped until you’ve passed your CBT, we can insure your bike while you wait to take your training. We offer laid-up cover, which protects your moped against fire and theft while it’s off the road.
Note that, if you’re purchasing a moped, you’ll need to either get it delivered to you by the dealer, or someone who has already passed their CBT with valid short-term insurance will need to ride it home for you. Alternatively, you can hire a van to transport it.
You’ll need to do the same if you want to ride your own moped for your CBT. And once you pass your training, make sure to take out cover if you want to ride it back home.
Can you use a moped NCB on car insurance?
We’re one of very few insurance companies that can take your previous riding history into account when getting you a car insurance quote. Get in touch with our team and we can put you through to our sister company, Adrian Flux.
Can you ride a moped without insurance?
No, you must have valid insurance if you want to ride a moped on public roads in the UK. If you’re caught without at least third party cover, you could face a fine, points on your licence, and the police could seize and destroy your bike. It’s never worth the risk.
Does moped insurance count towards my no claims bonus?
Yes, if you’ve taken out an annual moped insurance policy with us, you’ll start building up your no claims bonus. This will help reduce the costs of your cover in the years to come. Even if you decide to change bikes – whether you’re upgrading to a more powerful motorcycle or you’re switching to another moped – you can use the NCB you build up on your next one.
Does travel insurance cover mopeds?
Most standard travel insurance policies won’t automatically cover mopeds you’re taking on holiday with you unless you specifically request this. However, when you purchase travel insurance with us, you can insure your moped or motorcycle too.
Is moped insurance cheaper than car insurance?
In most cases, yes. Mopeds offer an affordable way of getting on the road, especially for young motorists. As they’re relatively low powered compared to cars, they’re generally cheaper to run and insure.
Am I insured for a moped abroad?
This will depend on the wording of your policy. If you’re in doubt, it’s best to check your policy documents before taking your moped abroad. And if you’re not covered, get in touch with us. We can offer cover for tours and holidays in Europe and further afield.
Can you insure a moped without tax?
No, you’ll need valid tax to get insurance on your moped. The only case you’re able to get cover without tax is if you have a tax exemption, such as if your bike is 40 years old or over or you qualify for a disabled rider exemption. In these cases, however, you must apply for the tax exemption and still get the moped taxed, even if you do not have to pay.
